fireworksfinallayersWinter sports enthusiasts are invited to ring in 2010 on the slopes in the High Country of North Carolina.

The festivities begin with a 10:30 p.m. fireworks show at Beech Mountain Resort, while Sugar Mountain Resort lights the skies at midnight.

Beech Mountain Resort provides night skiing until 10 p.m., followed by ice skating from 10 p.m. to midnight. Folks can watch the 10:30 p.m. fireworks display from the Viewhaus restaurant or anywhere in the Alpine village at the base of the slopes. There will also be live music in the Beech Tree Bar & Grill from Chasing Edison, a Charlotte-based rock band.

Sugar Mountain Resort has skiing, tubing and ice skating until 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. At midnight, the public is invited to a combined torch light parade and fireworks show, while the Terry Batson Band provides live beach music and oldies in the lodge.

For info on these celebrations, visit the websites for each resort:  www.skisugar.com and www.skibeech.com.

Be sure to visit us at Headwaters at Banner Elk when you’re in town for the celebrations! With six community parks, two lakes, miles of professionally built trails and a mountaintop clubhouse unequaled elsewhere, it is understandable why The Headwaters continues to set the standard by which all other communities are compared.

One question I often hear is “How are the roads in winter?”

Its a good question that everyone should ask when considering buying property in the mountains.  Its one thing to be enraptured by the scenic beauty in the spring, summer and fall, but if the roads are not properly maintained in the winter, your mountain experience can be unsettling at best and outright dangerous at worst.

Here within The Headwaters, we have a dedicated road maintenance crew that keeps our roads better than any in the market.  They ONLY serve Headwaters.  In many communities, the snow crew is first obligated to clear shopping centers and retailer parking lots, leaving individual property owners to wait.

Example, the photos that are part of this blog show our road conditions the morning after we experienced an unusual 20″ snow fall.  One of our full time residents arrived late in the night during this snowstorm and had no problem getting to their home after they entered the gate.  She commented, “Just one more reason we love living here!”  If you can’t enjoy your mountain home during all four seasons, you’re missing a lot of the fun.  img_3388

Winter is beautiful up here when the lakes occassionally freeze over and you can go skiing or snow tubing at the nearby ski resorts

So, make sure you inquire as to how the roads are maintained.

You’ll find at The Headwaters, we take good care of our property owners.”

With six community parks, two lakes, miles of professionally built trails and a mountaintop clubhouse unequaled elsewhere, it is understandable why The Headwaters continues to set the standard by which all other communities are compared.

viewsAvery County is the 100th and last county formed in North Carolina in 1911, from portions of Mitchell, Watauga and Caldwell Counties.

It is named for Waightstill Avery (1741-1819) who was a Colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, a member of North Carolina state legislature, 1776, 1782-83, 1793, North Carolina State Attorney General, 1777-79; and a member of North Carolina state senate, 1796. It is characterized by rugged mountains including Grandfather Mountain, home to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games & Gathering of Scottish Clans.

It has the highest average elevation of any county in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, reaching that of 5,964 ft. above sea level. Approximately half of the county lies within the Pisgah National Forest. There are many wild trout streams and ski resorts located within its boundaries.

by Jessica Wright

The Headwaters at Banner Elk has written 19 contracts for 2009 versus 23 for 2008.

“We are very pleased with our performance this year, given the difficult
economic environment. One of our biggest strengths this year has been the
construction of several new custom homes for property owners.  They’ve
recognized that The Headwaters is on secure footing and that building costs
are down, so they’ve taken advantage of this situation,” says developer John Haynes.

Including condos, cottages and custom homes, The Headwaters has 31 completed residences with another six under construction.

The Headwaters is also in the design stage for its new indoor pool facility. Construction funds were secured in November and construction should begin in the early spring. The pool will be located next to the clubhouse, enjoying a 20 mile view and will feature a movable wall of glass on the view side that can be opened up in the warmer months.

According to Haynes, The Headwaters will soon release for sale the new Lakeside Villas Town Homes. This neighborhood of 20 town homes will be situated overlooking the Upper Lake at The Headwaters with two town homes per building. These town homes will feature two and three bedroom plans plus attached garages. Prices are anticipated to start in the upper $300’s.
