Headwaters Outdoor Companion Guide

Posted by: Headwaters    in Headwaters at Banner Elk

picture1The Headwaters at Banner Elk is blessed to have such outstanding property owners within its family.  One such family is the Wood family of Hillsborough, North Carolina.  Michael and Dorothy Wood purchased a Springhouse Villa Condominium just over a year ago and love being at The Headwaters.  Michael owns an environmental services company called The Catena Group which provides soils evaluation, wetlands surveys, environmental impact statements, etc.  Part of what attracted them to The Headwaters was the abundance of natural beauty and wildlife not often found in other communities.  This prompted Michael to create a one of a kind outdoor guide book.

The result is the 44 page Headwaters Outdoor Companion Guide which can be viewed by clicking http://www.tcg-ecoguides.com/outdoor-companion/index.html.  This is a professionally created guide book that details the plant life, flora, wildlife habitat and natural features found in The Headwaters.  This includes descriptions of “micro-environments” around waterfalls, springs and the unique rock formations.  It even describes the history of the property including how there was once a railroad spur of the Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad, better known as “Tweetsie” that traveled up to what is today the Lakeside Picnic Pavilion.  It was used for logging in the late 1800’s.  It was also discovered that there was at least one moonshine still located on the property, evidence of which has been found under a large overhang adjacent to the Falls Creek Waterfall.

These are just some of the interesting details about The Headwaters and surrounding area you’ll learn.  The guide will eventually be printed and available for purchase to be used when hiking the many miles of walking trails located within The Headwaters and throughout the adjoining Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests.  We congratulate Michael and his team of experts on the fantastic job they’ve done in creating this outdoor guide.  To our knowledge, no other development in the High Country offers anything like it.  But then again, no other development features such incredible natural scenic beauty.”

A New Generation Of Old World Charm

Posted by: Headwaters    in Headwaters at Banner Elk

custom-home

A community as beautiful as The Headwaters deserves to be built upon using architectural designers and craftsmen of world-class stature.

You will not see a brick or stucco home on the slopes of The Headwaters—it just wouldn’t be right. There is no comparison to a home built using hand hewn timbers, stone and shingles, not to mention the fine craftsmanship evident in timber frame construction.

We will help you get connected to the right folks that will make your mountain home dreams become a reality. Or if you prefer, bring your own architect and floor plans to build from a design that is uniquely you.

conveniences-banner-elk-downtownThe First Annual Banner Elk Downtown Get Down is scheduled for this Sunday, October 25th from 1:00pm until dark!

Already being affectionately referred to as “the festivus for the rest of us”, citizens of Banner Elk are banding together to help a community member in need and bring some great music and fun to the High Country.  What started as discussions about the best way to assist a friend who must undergo a kidney transplant has grown into what they hope will be an annual music festival for the locals.  On Sunday, October 25th everyone in the High Country is invited to the Banner Elk Town Park for the “Downtown Get Down”.

Donating food for the event are Artisinal Restaurant, The Bayou Smokehouse, Stonewall’s, Sorrento’s, Bellas, Pappy’s and The Hearthstone Tavern & Grille.  The silent auction will include items from Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, Ski Country Sports, Pepper’s, Crippen’s Country Inn and Restaurant, Makoto’s, The Best Cellar at the Inn at Ragged Garden, Peabody’s Wine and Beer Merchants, Finders Keepers, Savory Thymes, Erick’s Cheese and Wine, The Louisiana Purchase, The Best Western Mountain Lodge, The 1906 Pine Crest Inn, Dereka’s Sugar Mountain Accommodations,  and Elk River Country Club.

The festivities will begin at 1:00 pm and continue on until dark, or maybe a little later (the event is planned to run until 6pm but if the weather is nice and we’re all having a blast, we may stay until 10pm).  There will be face painting and other activities for the kiddies as well as a great playground already available.  The organizers ask that you not bring coolers as the music is free and the money being raised will come solely from the sale of food, drink, t-shirts and the silent auction.

Named One Of The Top Ten Fall Festivals in North America by the Society of American Travel Writers!

The Wooly Worm Festival is October 17th, 2009!

Back in the late 1970s, the editor of the now-defunct Mountain Living Magazine, Jim Morton, was preparing to include a Woolly Worm Forecast in the winter issue of the magazine. He photographed the first Woolly Worm he saw to use in formulating the prediction and illustrating his story, but the next day he saw a second worm that looked completely different from the first.

“That’s when it struck me that we needed some formal procedure to use to decide which was going to be the official worm for making the winter forecast,” said Morton.

So since 1978, the residents of the village nestled between the Carolina’s two largest ski resorts have celebrated the coming of the snow season with a Woolly Worm Festival. They set aside the third weekend in October  to determine which one worm will have the honor of predicting the severity of the coming winter; and they make that worm earn the honor by winning heat after heat of hard-fought races - up a three-foot length of string.

Learn more about the Banner Elk area…

Posted by: Headwaters    in Banner Elk

the-high-country-banner-elk-castle

Banner Elk and surrounding areas offer a quality of life that is sought by many folks today . . .  a beautiful mountain retreat away from the busy crowds where one can still have access to the finer conveniences found in larger metropolitan areas. We invite you to come and Discover the Spirit of Mountain Living in The Headwaters of Banner Elk, situated right in the heart of the North Carolina High Country, just ten minutes from downtown.

Drive time from Charlotte, NC is just over 2 hours. We’re also only 2 hours from Winston-Salem and Greensboro, NC and just under 4 hours from Raleigh, NC.

Banner Elk itself, is a quaint mountain town located 30 minutes from Boone, home to Appalachian State University. This beautiful Avery County setting is surrounded by some of the highest mountains east of the Rockies including Grandfather Mountain and Beech Mountain. The Blue Ridge Parkway traverses the county just six miles from town.

Banner Elk is home to Lees McRae College and features a lively arts and crafts cultural scene, complete with an intimate pedestrian shopping district of upscale boutiques and outstanding restaurants, several of which are regularly featured in national travel and food magazines.

With four distinct seasons, Banner Elk offers a wonderful year-round climate. Spring blossoms beautifully with rhododendron and mountain laurel. Summer features sunny days for outdoor activities and cool evenings for relaxation. Fall bursts forth in a palette of brilliant colors while Winter provides skiing and cozy nights by the fireside.

The higher elevations of this region make for cooler summer temperatures. In fact, Avery County’s seat, the town of Newland, and neighboring Beech Mountain are the highest county seat and incorporated town, respectively, in the eastern United States. Don’t be fooled by other mountain towns that claim cool summers but have lower elevations. If you are looking for cooler summer temperatures, you can’t do any better than the High Country, home to The Headwaters. That’s why its called “The High Country.”
